Academic libraries vs. high school libraries?

As I read this week's articles I started to reflect how my teenage daughter uses mySpace and Facebook.  I'm not convinced that MySpace is used more by teens and Facebook by Undergrads - this may have been the case a few years ago, but today I'm being told that everyone is using Facebook and that MySpace is more for music.

So...  if we know that teens are using Facebook extensively, should high school librarians consider using it as well?  We know the identity pitfalls and the bullying issues that have arisen - but should these incidents prevent high school librarians and teachers from using facebook to connect to students?

Imagine a class of high school students coming to University who have used Facebook to connect to their teachers and librarians - would this change how Academic libraries use Facebook?  I suspect it would.  I suspect we would see more use and perhaps students would also be more willing to accept our "intrusion" into their social network?

Interesting questions...  I'll keep watching how facebook use progresses as my daughters move from high school to University.

The case studies for this week - I'm not a big fan of MySpace - maybe because I don't get it :)  The AADL MySpace page was just too long and as a user it really didn't grab my attention - and again I have to wonder who would look to MySpace for a library page?  I really like the Hennepin County Library facebook page - this is something that really grabs me - I can't explain it - but seeing all of our students using Facebook I have to wonder whether this would work?  Something to try later on :)

Well think I'll quit there for the night...

I definitely surf myspace for

I definitely surf myspace for music (specific bands, usually--I'm not a browser). The ability to stream music is the number 1 reason musicians love myspace as a promotional tool.
