Social Software and Librarianship

I use to think of social software and gaming as something that young people engaged in to pass their time. I now think of it as a way to form groups, community and to enhance learning and ideas.  My favourite tools are blogging, delicious and YouTube.

We need to market our services!

Libraries are places that people frequent for learning and pleasure reading.  Many visit libraries as a way of continuing their education once they have completed formal schooling.  As learning facilities we need to ensure that we are equipped with the staff and learning tools to meet the expectations of our customers, as well as make them aware of what we have to offer them.

New ways for libraries to promote themselves

Media sharing is another new technology that offers us ways of sharing, self-expression as well as the ability to promote various media.

New generation=New ways of learning

When people think of gaming and virtual worlds the first thing that comes to mind is entertainment. Both these types of technology have usually been viewed as things teens, participate in their spare time.

User’s Information tool

Folksonomies give people the ability to classify information in a way that is clear to them. If a user can locate information and store it in a manner that is easy for them, then learning is that much more fun! Tags that people select to label content are terms that they can easily remember.

Librarians keep tagging!

My experiences with social bookmarking and tagging have expanded from taking this course, and also from being part of the group project on this subject area. I use to think of tagging as a way of saving a website and referring back to it at a later date. Now I see it as a means of learning, and sharing information with others. This social software tool has opened up a whole new way of how I think about obtaining, storing and sharing online information.

Why a WIki?

Meredith Farkas brings up so excellent points in her article So You Want To Build a Wiki? Before deciding to use a wiki, we need to think of its purpose. For example, why are we posting a wiki on our library website? Is it meeting the need of what we are trying to get across? Could we use another technology that better serves our purpose?

RSS Feeds-Keeping us informed

I find that having RSS feeds is a great way of keeping informed on subjects of interest, current events, and news. Randy Reichardt points out in his article that a wealth of information is available through feeds without having to surf the net.
