"Please, hate us"?
I'm trying to make up my mind about whether government libraries are more bureaucratic that the academic and public libraries I've worked at. I think by definition they have to be because they're tasked with serving a bureaucracy. And all of them, in some way, are funded by public money. Which means you're going to get a very big stink if an effort falls flat.
"Why are my tax dollars paying for this?"
We've got a lot more to get past than Microsoft does, and the stakes are higher. Sure, microsoft has realeased plenty of really stupid things, but that's actually kind of expected and those flops come out of a budget that's theirs to burn. For us, even a small misdirected effort can be a headache.
It's still worth it. The challenge is that you need someone to lead the charge and take the flack. You need enthusiasm, a strong argument and a solid plan. And you need a straight-faced solid answer to "but what if we fail?"
